About This Product Description This text grew out of a three-year curriculum development project funded by the National Science Foundation. The overarching goal of this project is to create a cohesive set of teaching and learning material—including text, projects, labs, and web-based material that reinforce each other to form an integrated classroom curriculum that will meet the needs of future engineers and scientists.
Salient features of this project include: greater emphasis on collected data using designed studies; emphasis on processes, in particular, the notion of process stability; early emphasis on identifying sources of variablility through tools such as stratified plots and on formulas and hand circulation.
Other characteristics are reduced coverage of the mathematics of probability and statistics, a focus on teamwork and cooperative learning through applications in the text, exercise labs, and projects that are geared to engineering and science experience. Features Reflects an applied, modern approach: Collecting data using designed studies is a theme that runs through the book and is introduced in chapter 3.
Processes are emphasized beginning with chapter 1, in which the notion of process stability is explored. Early coverage is given to identifying sources of variability through such tools as stratified plots, panel plots, ishikawa and process flow diagrams. The mathematics of probability and statistics are de-emphasized.
Includes an innovative chapter on distribution-free inference that presents traditional rank-based procedures, bootstrapping, and permutation tests. Offers a modular course structure that allows flexibility in coverage and emphasis.
Each chapter forms a coherent whole with text, labs, and projects. Relies more heavily on computer calculations and simulations than on formulas and hand calculation. An emphasis is given to displaying and analyzing data using the computer Each chapter includes a hands-on computer lab to develop and expand the material in a direct, interactive way.
Although almost any statistical software package may be used for the lab, detailed instructions for performing the lab are available for Minitab and SAS on the Petruccelli web site. The Data disk contains over real data sets and numerous custom-written SAS and Minitab macros for use in the labs and analyses.
Mini- Projects and Capstone Projects give students hands-on experience in obtaining and analyzing data, working in groups, and writing reports on their findings. The projects serve as vehicles for students to experience the practice of statistics from design through final report. Worked examples illustrate every concept. Often real data based, the examples provide step by step solutions to applied problems.
