The spasmodic dysphonia is an alteration in the larynx at the vocal folds level where we may find alterations in the movements adduction closing and abduction opening , resulting from involuntary contractions of the larynx muscles.

During the adduction movement, the vocal folds are superadduced causing spasms. The person needs too much efforts and tension to talk due to the larynx valvular action which prevails over its desire to vocalize. The voice comes in jolts due to the hyperconstriction, with interruptions, being impossible to vocalize. But in the abduction movement, the vocal folds approach in an excessively loose way, due to a fail in the abductors muscles, interrupting temporarily the vocalization by the air escape during the phonation, resulting in blowing voice and sometimes in aphonia.
